⚠️ Before You Start (Read This)

Let’s be honest:

  • This setup is experimental

  • It is not production-ready

  • Tool execution can break

  • Performance depends heavily on hardware

If you expect a polished ChatGPT-like experience β€” this is not it.

If you want full control + local AI experimentation, this is powerful.

πŸš€ What You’re Building

  • A self-hosted AI agent (OpenClaw)

  • Running on a local LLM via LM Studio

  • No API keys, no subscription, no tracking

🧠 What is OpenClaw?

OpenClaw is an open-source autonomous AI agent.

Unlike normal chatbots, it can:

  • Execute tasks automatically (heartbeat system)

  • Run terminal commands

  • Access local files

  • Use integrations (GitHub, Gmail, etc.)

It acts more like a system operator than a chatbot.

πŸ–₯️ Why LM Studio?

LM Studio lets you run LLMs locally with a GUI and API server.

Key advantages:

  • No telemetry (fully local)

  • OpenAI-compatible API

  • Easy model download

  • GPU acceleration (CUDA / Metal)

πŸ’» System Requirements (Realistic)

ResourceMinimumRecommended
RAM16 GB32 GB+
Storage20 GB50 GB+
GPUOptionalStrongly recommended
Node.jsv18+v20+

πŸ‘‰ Below 16GB RAM β†’ expect slow or unstable performance

βš™οΈ Step 1 β€” Install LM Studio & Download Model

  1. Download LM Studio from official site

  2. Open β†’ Go to Model Search

  3. Choose based on hardware:

Lightweight (low-end systems):

  • Qwen 3 4B (Q4)

  • GLM 4.7 Flash

Mid-range:

  • Qwen3-Coder 32B

  • Devstral 24B

⚠️ Critical Setting (Do NOT Skip)

While loading model:

  • Enable Advanced Settings

  • Set:

    • Context Window β†’ 32K+

    • GPU Offload β†’ MAX

πŸ‘‰ If context is too low β†’ OpenClaw will fail silently

πŸ”Œ Step 2 β€” Start LM Studio Server

In LM Studio:

  • Go to Developer tab

  • Enable:

    • Developer Mode

    • Start Server

Default:

http://127.0.0.1:1234/v1

Test:

http://127.0.0.1:1234/v1/models

πŸ“¦ Step 3 β€” Install OpenClaw

curl -fsSL https://getclaw.dev | bash

Windows:

iwr https://getclaw.dev/install.ps1 | iex

During setup:

  • Choose Quickstart

  • Select Skip provider

πŸ› οΈ Step 4 β€” Configure openclaw.json

Open config:

nano ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json

Paste:

{
  "models": {
    "mode": "merge",
    "providers": {
      "lmstudio": {
        "baseUrl": "http://127.0.0.1:1234/v1",
        "apiKey": "lm-studio",
        "api": "openai-responses",
        "models": [
          {
            "id": "qwen3-4b",
            "name": "Qwen3 4B",
            "contextWindow": 32768,
            "maxTokens": 4096
          }
        ]
      }
    }
  },
  "agents": {
    "defaults": {
      "model": {
        "primary": "lmstudio/qwen3-4b"
      }
    }
  }
}

πŸ‘‰ Important:

  • Model ID must match LM Studio exactly

  • API key can be anything

▢️ Step 5 β€” Start OpenClaw

openclaw gateway start

Expected output:

Gateway running at http://localhost:3000
LM Studio connected

πŸ§ͺ Step 6 β€” Test

Open:

http://localhost:3000

Try:

What model are you using?
List files in my home directory

🐞 Common Errors (Real Fixes)

❌ Connection refused

β†’ LM Studio server not running

❌ Model not found

β†’ Wrong model ID

❌ Empty / broken output

β†’ Increase context window

❌ Slow performance

β†’ Model too large for hardware

❌ Tool calls failing

β†’ Model not good at structured output

⚑ Performance Tips

  • Use smaller models (4B–8B)

  • Close background apps

  • Enable GPU if available

  • Reduce concurrency

πŸ”₯ What Works

  • Local chat

  • Basic agent tasks

  • Offline usage

❌ What Doesn’t Work (Yet)

  • Reliable automation

  • Complex workflows

  • High accuracy tool execution

🧠 Final Thoughts

OpenClaw + LM Studio is powerful β€” but raw.

Right now, it's best for:

  • Learning AI agents

  • Local experimentation

  • Privacy-first setups

If you expect stability β†’ you’ll be disappointed If you want control β†’ this is worth it
