Important Note

umbrelOS is primarily designed for Umbrel Home. While it can be installed on other x86 systems, support is best-effort and not guaranteed. Compatibility issues may arise due to hardware and driver differences.

Minimum System Requirements

Before proceeding with the installation, ensure your system meets these minimum requirements:

  • CPU: Dual-core 64-bit Intel or AMD processor (Quad-core or higher recommended)

  • RAM: 4GB (8GB+ recommended)

  • Storage: 32GB (actual needs depend on your use case)

💡 Tip: For running a Bitcoin node, you'll typically need 1TB or more. For file/media storage, estimate based on your cloud services usage.

Installation Process

Step 1: Prepare a Bootable USB Stick

  1. Download the latest umbrelOS USB installer on your computer.

  2. Download and install Balena Etcher.

  3. Insert a USB stick (minimum 4GB) into your computer.

⚠️ Warning: The USB stick will be formatted, erasing all existing data.

  4. Use Balena Etcher to flash the umbrelos-amd64-usb-installer.iso file to the USB stick.

Step 2: Boot from USB Stick

  1. Remove the USB stick from your computer and insert it into your target device.

  2. Connect a display and keyboard to your device (for desktops or NUCs/Mini PCs).

  3. Connect an Ethernet cable from your device to your internet router.

  4. Power on the device. It should automatically boot from the USB stick.

📝 Note: If your device doesn't boot from the USB automatically, you may need to adjust the boot priority in the BIOS settings.

Step 3: Install umbrelOS on Internal Storage

  1. After booting, you'll see a screen listing available storage devices.

  2. Identify the correct internal storage device for umbrelOS installation.

  3. Note the corresponding number of your chosen device.

  4. Type the number and press Enter to begin installation.

Step 4: Finalize Installation

  1. Once the flashing process completes, turn off the device by pressing any key.

  2. Remove the USB stick, keyboard, and display.

Step 5: Boot Up!

  1. Ensure the USB stick is disconnected and the Ethernet cable is connected.

  2. Power on your device.

  3. The first boot will take approximately 5 minutes.

  4. Access umbrelOS by navigating to http://umbrel.local on any device on the same network.

⚠️ Important: If you see an umbrel login prompt in the terminal output, this is for terminal access only. To use umbrelOS, simply access http://umbrel.local in your web browser.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you can't access http://umbrel.local:

  1. On Windows, try http://umbrel.

  2. Use your router's admin dashboard or a network scanning tool like 'Fing' to find the device's IP address.

  3. Connect a display and keyboard, log in, and run hostname -I to find the IP address.

  4. Enter the IP address directly in a web browser to access umbrelOS.
